We live in a very diverse country. All people are different really. So while diversity has been a hot topic as of late there has always been a level of diversity even if only on a very low level as compared to today’s diverse population. Today when we talk about diversity we are mainly referring to minorities, such as women, blacks, Hispanics, and Gay and transgender individuals and how they fit into the workplace, politics, and social paradigms of today.

In the workforce diversity can drive morale up by the enlightenment of individuals which in turn can drive up production. In his article “HOW DIVERSITY WORKS” in Scientific American, Paul Caleb states “People who are different from one another in race, gender and other dimensions bring unique information and experiences to bear on the task at hand. A male and a female engineer might have perspectives as different from one another as an engineer and a physicist — and that is a good thing.” More and more people have learned that being different does not mean bad or evil just because someone does not fit the majority mold. Employees as well as employers are also learning that diversity among the workers can help to broaden the spectrum of knowledge and ideas. Remember the saying that two heads are better than one, well two diverse heads are even better. An employee that brings differences to the table can benefit not only the company, but other workers as well by educating people about their culture or life experiences that may differ from the other workers. People may also realize that sometimes even with a diverse pool of workers, most people are the same when it comes to the core principles of morality and fairness.

Diversity is needed in politics. Our government should reflect “we the people” so that minorities can feel they are fairly represented. If people feel they have a representative that can relate to their specific issue or the fact that they fit into a minority could help minorities to foster better relations with politicians. In her article “What Are the Advantages of Diversity in Politics?”, Kate Bradley says “Political diversity grants constituents access to civil servants who speak the same language – both literally and figuratively – which can lead to increased voter participation and satisfaction.” I agree the more minorities that are elected into office the more one can see that there is a change in the country as far as how minorities should be treated especially as compared to years ago when there was virtually no diversity in our government. After all, most Americans today agree when it comes to the elements of freedom and justice for all.

Of course there can be disadvantages to a diverse workforce. Sometimes there can be a language barrier that could cause some misunderstandings or require additional training to be able to effectively communicate with one another. There could also be differences in thought processes causing workers to disagree. However, this could happen even without minority diversity. No two people will agree all of the time. You don’t have to agree with someone to respect their right to dignity and respect. We were all created equal even if we are not the same. Besides how boring and robotic would life be if we were all the same?

In conclusion, I welcome opportunities to work with and associate with any minority. I myself am a minority. However, I have never considered myself as belonging to a minority group. I embrace others’ differences as I can only learn from and benefit from knowing people who more than likely have been forced to think outside the box, especially since they most likely do not fit in the box.
